URB Presents: Jon Convex
Today’s entry in our podcast series comes from one of the most lauded producers at the moment, Jon Convex. Initially one of the two that make up the unquestionably fantastic outfit Instra:mental (Boddika being his counterpart), the duo splintered off to do their own thing within the past couple of years and have been making informative and transcendental dance music under their own solo aliases.
With Convex, he’s been busy on labels such as previously affiliated imprints Naked Lunch and Nonplus, as well as Martyn’s burgeoning label 3024. In addition to his work on 3024 (includingLied To Be Loved feat. dBridge), he’ll be busy with his own imprint, simply titled Convex Industries.
With his unique, shifted take on dancefloor grooves and rhythmic notions, we’re more than happy to present Jon Convex’s URB podcast to you all. Check out the mix and tracklist after the jump.

Electronic Explorations 198: Guy Andrews
Following last year’s triumphant debut on Untold’s imprint Hemlock, Brighton based producer Guy Andrews is back with his first 12″ for Hotflush Recordings. A superb followup to his 2011 auditory missive, The Wait / Hands in Mine merges percussive elements with heavy basslines resulting in two dark dancefloor cuts.
Shuffling and persistent, Side A is bass-driven track filled with arpeggiated goodness, while on the flip, Andrews shows off his ability to manipulate genres by using a bass kick and frenzied rhythmic percussion to dial up an atmospheric tune.
With recent acclaim from XLR8R, Resident Advisor and Truants along with DJ and radio support from the likes of Benji B, L-Vis 1990, Brackles, Sound Pellegrino, Shortstuff, Benjamin Damage and Throwing Snow, Guy Andrews is on the rise. Lookout for another 12″ via Hotflush this Fall.

Shifted - Resident Advisor (RA.310)
Textured techno from one of the genre’s new key players.
In order to avert attention from a famed career within another genre, the guy behind Shifted chooses to remain anonymous. It appears to have worked. Rather than comparisons to his prior achievements, the talk regarding his output over the past 12 months has been centred on Shifted’s often bleak—and always textually rich—run of releases. In truth, he was always likely to be taken in earnest with a debut (Drained) on Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver. Evidently buoyed by his new-found creative freedom, Shifted went on to work with promising upstart techno imprints Our Circula Sound and Syndrome Z (and started his own, Avian, with fellow shadow-seeker Ventress) while continuing a relationship with Mote-Evolver which culminated in April of this year withCrossed Paths, his striking debut album.
As you’ll likely be able to tell from the tracklist below, Shifted’s interest in techno predates any serious involvement with the music industry, with time-honoured tracks by ESP and Damon Wild rubbing up against exciting newcomers like ROD, Markus Suckut and Rødhåd.
