This is now the 4th time Ruckspin has graced the decks for ELECTRONIC EXPLORATIONS ….. One of the most consistant and driven producers of a generation, it’s always a pleasure to have Ruckspin on EE …Part of the famous ‘Ranking Records’ collective (EE’s most loved mix ever), one half of Tectonic’s ‘Author’ and as sound designer of ‘Submotion Orchestra’ it seems Dom Ruckspin can’t sit still .. give the man an Xbox someone !!!

“This mix includes several of my favourite tracks at the minute, from more laid-back soulful tracks like Planas’ “Breathless” and Riskotheque and Marchmellow’s remix of “Don’t Explain” through to heavyweight melon-twisters like Jack Sparrow’s “Afraid of me” and Goth Trad’s “Mach”. The mix includes some of my favourite tracks from Rob Booth’s recent EE compilation, and there are also a few of my own tracks in there just for good measure. Most of the tracks have been highlights at gigs I’ve played recently, and I can’t wait to drop them at Outlook and Dimensions in Croatia this year.”

RA Podcast: RA.318 Rrose

Techno and experimental from the depths.

Whether or not it was by design, the artist recording under the alias Rrose came to define the final phase of one of contemporary techno’s greatest imprints. Sandwell District called time on their fiercely independent operation at the end of 2011, but not before they’d released three singles and an album from the enigmatic, Duchamp-referencing producer. Primary Evidence—the first of these EPs—hit the club-ready yet experimental groove of its Sandwell District predecessors right from its opening bars; Merchant Of Salt, and in particular its wonderfully insane B-side “Waterfall,” was equally as thrilling. However, Rrose’s relationship with the imprint was in fact established over his collaborative work with veteran US sound artist Bob Ostertag. Imprint affiliate Juan Mendez (AKA Silent Servant) passed on material to the rest of the group behind the label that would end up forming part of the Motormouth Variations full-length.

“Texture, space and feel” are of primary concern to Rrose on RA.318, a mix that services the head and feet in equal measures. [interview here]

XLR8R Podcast 254: Ben Sims

It seems like most techno veterans hail from either Detroit or Berlin. Granted, the key word there is “most,” as Ben Sims calls London home and has been dropping records and making his mark in the techno world since the late ’90s. Apart from his own numerous releases, Sims has been enlisted to remix a slew of techno heavyweights over the years, including Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Joey Beltram, and others too numerous to list.

He also heads up the long-running Theory label, and more recently launched the Machineimprint with Kirk Degiorgio, which takes its name from the pair’s new-music-devoted London party. While many DJs who’ve been around this long are content to simply continue rehashing the past, Sims remains dedicated to forward movement and innovative sounds, which is why we’re excited to see where he takes things when given the freedom to assemble an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Make no mistake, the mix has its share of old-school classics—many of which have been edited or remixed by Sims himself—but it also contains many newer selections, including several cuts from artists associated with so-called “bass music.”

Genre tags aside, the podcast offers a remarkably cohesive listen, as Sims keeps the pedal to the floor throughout, serving up 70 minutes of hard, pulsing rhythms. But there’s more here than just four-on-the-floor thud; with his wealth of experience, Sims understands the importance of melody, soul, and, yes, nuance in a DJ set. There may be a lot happening in this podcast, but Sims’ steady hand proves more than capable of making it work and, more importantly, crafting a compelling listen.
