United States of Audio | De La Soul - 3 Feet High & Rising Audio Documentary Mix | Solid Steel Radio Show 24/5/2013 Part 1 + 2
Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year’s treatment of ‘Paul’s Boutique’ (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul’s groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It’s not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary. In his own words:
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums. When De La Soul’s debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate’s older brother (though I’m pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can’t think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it’s time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul…’

Virgo Four - XLR8R Podcast - 05.17.11
After re-emerging from the Chicago house ether last year with the Rush Hour reissue of its seminal self-titled album from 1989, the duo of Merwyn Sanders and Eric Lewis (a.k.a. Virgo Four) has seen its music and, perhaps more importantly, its influence, finally given its proper due. Last month, the pair continued to build upon that legacy with the release of Resurrection, a massive batch of previously unheard and unreleased material from 1984 to 1990. Here at XLR8R, we’ve elected to keep the celebration going by inviting Virgo Four to put together an exclusive mix for our podcast series, and the fellas have more than delivered, putting together a DJ session that pulls heavily from the salad days of Chicago house music. There are flat-out classics here, not to mention plenty of acid lines, stripped-down drum-machine beats, and soulful vocal snippets. While it’s impossible to truly re-experience that signature Chicago sound in 2011—at least in the same context as Sanders and Lewis once did—mixes like this one do help recreate some of the Midwestern magic that gave birth to Virgo Four and its old-school house brethren.

DJ Spinna’s Tribute To Q
Spinna’s tribute mix to the legendary Quincy Jones, a man whose career has covered genres, eras and races. Nor will I be spending time & words extolling the virtues of Spinna’s techniques & his ear for the music. Instead of heaping praise on them, I figure I’ll let the mix do the talking at this point. Stream it, grab it, but whatever you do, enjoy it.

Lord Finesse – Diggin’ In The Crates Live in Sydney
Ohhhh shit — Cold Crushin’ Mixes is back with more fire for ’011. This time we got the original funky man Lord Finesse; of legendary New York hip hop crew D.I.T.C, live on two technics and the M.I.C. And baby — they don’t call the man Lord Finesse for nothin’. Fin shows us what D.I.T.C is all about, ramming in 100 tracks in his two hour set covering hip hop and beats to soul, funk, boogie, disco and new jack swing as only a true crate digger can, as well as rocking the MIC Lord Finesse style, spitting a freestyle and some classic Finesse bars.
Effortlessly smooth mixes and cuts, beat juggling that had hands in the air and minds blowing and most importantly, a dope track selection that had the whole house at Tone rocking out all night long. There was a bit of controversy around Sydney at the time of this show over Finesse doing a DJ set instead of a straight live show. A whole lot of cats were complaining — but damn son, as far as we’re concerned, anybody who walked away unhappy after this just doesn’t know what’s up with real hip hop anyway. Finesse is the motherfucking man baby!

The Stretch & Bobbito Show - Valentine’s Day Special - 2.14.97
This is a Stretch & Bobbito show from Valentine’s Day, 1997. Actually, the show was broadcast Thursday the 13th, but technically the show was running in the early, early morning hours of the 14th.
There’s no hip hop on this one, but two hours of funky Valentine originals courtesy of Stretch. The tracks range from Ultimate Breaks (Marva Whitney, Joe Quarterman, The Headhunters) to some funk (Curtis Mayfield, Bill Dogget, The Meters) to smooth R&B & jazz (Evelyn King, The Jacksons, Bob James, Kool & the Gang). Stretch rarely played non hip hop records on his show so this one is kind of a treat. Enjoy.
