Hailing from the southwestern part of Norway, VLR has been playing records after and on top of each other since 96. Special Housin Association catch up with our latest guest DJ and get a few words from the man himself.

I’m primarily a bedroom dj, doing this for the love and thrill of music, but I’ve done the odd appearance in various places in Manchester. You’re most likely to catch me playing live on Mixlr on random times, and my monthly show on Future Music. I try to keep an interesting soundcloud and mixcloud for on-demand entertainment.

What to expect: I’ve focused a lot on the leftfield side of electronic music and techno, a lot of the Drexciya-inspired electro crops up regularly. However, I like to bring in old dance music classics and put them in a new context. Simply put: I try to span both genres and decades.

Electronic Explorations 191: Roel Funcken 

Roel Funcken’s production is painstakingly detailed, deep and ever-morphing, free of any boundaries and preconceptions. His brother Don Funcken is the other half of Funckarma. The mix goes moves through wonky beats to glitches, from abstract breaks to straight up d’n’b.

“I usually record these mixes in 1 or 2 takes, this one is no exception. I like to make drastic changes in the mixes, tempo-wise, dynamically and harmonically as well.  Going from ambient to Glitch Idm, back to Hip Hop to Dubstep and to Drum’n’bass again. Mixing my own tracks with trax from other musicians which I appreciate gives the whole mix a better perspective.”
