LWE Podcast 121: Delano Smith
If you were asked to give a potted history of Detroit’s electronic music, it’s granted that familiar names would pop up: the Belleville three, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Rob Hood, the Electrifyin’ Mojo, Ken Collier, Eddie Fowlkes, and Mike Banks among others. But without Delano Smith it can be fairly said that many of the founders of Detroit’s house and techno scene may not have been inspired to follow their respective paths and write their own part of history. An early protégée of Ken Collier, Smith first began DJing in the late 70s while still in his teens. After years of playing the city’s best clubs and putting on parties, he became disillusioned with the scene and took an extended hiatus.
Reigniting his passion for music and DJing in the early 90s, he forged close ties with Norm Talley and Mike Clark, and the three friends became known as the Beatdown Brothers. Smith went on to found his own label with his friend and fellow Detroit mainstay Tony Foster, Mixmode Recordings as well as recording for the likes of Third Ear and Sushitech, and more recently turning out a steady stream of remixes.
In anticipation of his gig at Fabric on Saturday, May 19th, Little White Earbuds got on the phone to Delano and discussed his relationship with music, how he started out in the early days, being inspired by his peers and what went into the making of his début album An Odyssey. He also put together our 121st exclusive podcast, an on-the-fly excursion through some of his past and present favorites that will leave you in no doubt as to the prowess of one of Detroit’s founding fathers. [interview here]

ELECTRONIC EXPLORATIONS - 202 - Polysick [Planet Mu]
Rome’s Egisto Sopor has been making little waves with his releases for quite a while now. Since we’ve known him he’s released a cdr album on Legowelt’s Strange Life Records and put a cassette out on the much admired 100% Silk label, both under the name ‘Polysick’. As ‘TheAwayTeam’ he’s released a DVD ‘Relax & Sleep’ and a cd ‘Star Kinship’ on Japanese label Moamoo. He is also one half of the low key video unit AAVV, whose work has graced many of the important releases of new lofi electronic movement.
Well, here is his first album proper ‘Digital Native‘, 15 tracks of glowing, nocturnal, analogue grace that hark back to acid house and early techno, but with a mood and intent that seems to be designed for watching images dance on closed eyelids. It’s no surprise that his work as a video artist resonates so strongly with the music he makes.
Polysick says of his approach, “When i make music I always have a visual part in mind. In this case, many of the tracks have been influenced by visions of tribal nocturnal mysterious explorations like in ‘Preda’ which is the italian word for “quarry”. I tried to convey a sense of mystery and danger with those swirling flutes and the timpani rolls too, like if you were in the middle of a jungle, in a deep dark night and you’re running away through the trees, haunted, like in some of those old zombie splatter movies from the 80’s.. same with ‘Tic-Tac Toe’, with that clock ticking and the deep bass...”
Polysick has tapped straight into the synthetic pleasures of early dance music’s otherworldly pulses, the hypnotic arpeggios of Italo disco, soaring Detroit chords, cosmic disco, the ’4th World’ music of Jon Hassell and the library exotics of Piero Umiliani. This is body music for the resting body, Imagine a nexus between early acid house and Italo music being used for mental therapy, exotic travelling and imagining, exciting the brain waves and journeying into imagined spaces. ‘Digital Native’ is set in this imagined line of enquiry..[source]

CLR Podcast 168 - SCB
It is Monday the 14th of May and today we have a new guest on the CLR Podcast. Paul Rose is best known for his Scuba alias which has yielded three albums since 2008, the most recent of which, Personality, was released in February. He’s also the head of the revered Hotflush label, which has covered a huge amount of musical ground, from proto-Dubstep (Benga, Distance) to abstract electronica (Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure) via house and techno (Joy Orbison, Sigha), since it’s first release in 2003.
Originally the SCB project was conceived as an antidote to the characteristic broken beats of the Scuba sound, as was shown on the first SCB release, a remix of Scuba’s own Hard Boiled taken from the album A Mutual Antipathy in 2008. The next few years saw the projects begin to converge, and by 2011 the two had almost become the same thing, with the releases of Loss (as SCB) and Adrenalin (as Scuba) both featuring a dancefloor-centric melodic house vibe.
With the release of the aforementioned Personality album the Scuba project has moved on to a different sound, and 2012 also heralds a new direction for SCB with a much more stripped-down, direct techno approach apparent in a recent remix for the Last Night On Earth label confirmed by forthcoming mixes for Echochord, Convex Industries and Hotflush (all featured on this podcast for CLR). New original SCB material is due later this year on Boddika’s Non Plus label and also the continuation of the SCB release series.

Electronic Explorations 200: =UHU= - Teleportrayed Souls Mix
“Universal Human Underground records” aka -=UHU=- records
In the beggining of creation, Universal Humans came to new born star – Earth. They build their civilization know to humanity as Atlantis, where the energy source came from magic crystals – the light of power, the light of Gods. This was one of the most advanced colonies in Solar system. After a “single day and night of misfortune” Atlantia civilisation sank in to the ocean, but by Mighty Gods` chosen members of civilization escaped from danger. Crystals were saved. […]
Now, living in underground they have to hide from mankind, as it has accumulated too much of “negative – charged” information, untill they open portal of light to source humanity`s information field with mental enlightenment. The audio signals are sent! The reaction has begun! Your subconsciousness is affected!
If crystals will fall into wrong hands, the future might not come…
